You might chalk it up to mere curiosity if you wind up in a bunker at the May River Golf Club. But like everything at this beautiful Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, the sand was chosen for a reason, as its grainy sand adheres better to sloped surfaces and holds up to bad weather. Of course, there's much more than sand on this beautiful par-72 course, which weaves almost 7,200 yards along the banks of the May River. Wide, fairways wind past old live oaks and palmetto trees, and golfers of different skill levels experience the pure game, reveling in the sights and sounds of remarkable natural surroundings. A state-of-the-art practice facility, gorgeous clubhouse, and skilled instructors complete the experience.

Palmetto Bluff was comprised of 21 plantations during the antebellum era. One of the plantation owners, Thomas Fenwick Drayton, was also the commander of the Confederate soldiers at Fort Walker on Hilton Head Island during the Battle of Port Royal. When General Drayton went up against his own brother, Captain Percival Drayton, commander of the Federal gunboat, the Confederate forces were defeated.

I think there are plenty of things to like about Palmetto Bluff. People around here say that it is the 2nd coming of Hilton Head Island. Imagine that!!
